Back to School Special pomotion! Recommended for ages 10+
This living kit includes an extensive Resource Guide (PDF format for easy download) filled with various STEAM activities about the five MicroBugs and Nasonia Wasps. Each kit also includes two petri dishes, two LiveSlides, two concavity slides, 10 coverslips, and two pipettes.
The five MicroBug LiveSlides include cultures of Amoeba, Blepharisma, Euglena, Paramecium, and Stentor. The innovative, unbreakable polypropylene containers allow users to view protists without microscope slides, coverslips, or droppers. Simply place a LiveSlide under the hand-held digital microscope. The tapered end of the container is filled with organisms. Cultures remain viable for several days in a LiveSlide, and the LiveSlides are reusable.
Further enhance and expand the study of living life cycles with Nasonia Wasps. The Nasonia Wasp is a harmless insect that parasitizes the Sarcophaga (flesh fly) pupae. Females usually lay 30–50 eggs in the pupae, which provide food for the Nasonia larvae when they hatch. Adults will emerge in approximately 14 days.
Nasonia are also easy to handle because they don’t sting or bite and they are not prone to flying away without warning. Nasonia helps to teach topics covering scientific method and techniques, genetics, behavior, selective advantage, as well as biotechnology.
- This harmless wasp develops inside the pupa of the Sarcophaga fly
- Pupae are easily sexable, making picking virgins for crosses extremely easy
- Refrigerate to halt development at any point
- Observe mutants without a dissecting scope
Commonly called the jewel wasp, Nasonia are better and more interesting study subjects for several reasons. Mutants are observable without dissecting scopes. They exhibit ritualistic courtship and mating behaviors. They have a parasitic life cycle and are easy to culture and maintain. To work around your schedule, the life cycle can be arrested by placing them in the refrigerator.
